How Secondary Transactions Could Revive Africa's Private Asset Market

31/10/2025

In an interview with International Business Times, Marc Lasserre, Managing Partner of S.O. Capital Advice, raises the alarm on a growing imbalance in the African private assets industry.

After years of significant fundraising, many investments remain stuck in the portfolios of funds active on the African continent.

This bottleneck is largely linked to funds raised in the early 2010s. The pandemic delayed divestments from these vehicles and, despite the market recovery, many assets remain in portfolios. The secondary market is a solution as it allows investors to sell existing portfolios and free up capital for new investments, while providing greater transparency for new entrants.

It is also important to strengthen the participation of African investors. The continent cannot rely indefinitely on external capital. Building a local base of institutional investors is essential to ensure sustainable and autonomous growth of the private equity industry in Africa.

Marc will present his insights during SuperReturn Africa in Cape Town in December 2025.
